You know what pisses me off?

If you have any kind of ailment, or issue, or problem of any sort... the answer to it is always that you need to get more sleep.

Have a cold? Get some sleep. Stressed? Try to get some sleep. Painful carpal tunnel syndrome? Some rest might help. Bells Palsy? Are you getting enough sleep at night?

WTF is Bells Palsy, anyway? Do I have it?

I was watching this show last night and the main character is Bipolar. Her father reminds her that the best thing she can do for herself, to get better, is to get enough sleep. And she agrees, so she goes home to sleep. And I was thinking... Well aren't YOU just so fucking lucky?? A single woman who lives alone with no kids? She should be the healthiest fucking person in the world; she can sleep whenever she wants!!!

See, I don't get to sleep whenever I want, or enough. Last night Child 2 was up until midnight because he's afraid of zombies. He watched something called The Zombie Apocalypse, which I think was on the Discovery Channel (I wasn't home when it happened) and ever since he's been totally freaked out by it. So last night he's bawling and saying "I don't want to be like this anymore; I want to be normal again" and, god, I felt so bad for him. But I can totally relate to what he's going through because when I was about 9 my parents let me watch the Exorcist, and that shit fucked me up for weeks. I'm not sure I was ever normal again after that (explains SOOOO much) but I understood completely what he was feeling. It's a shitty feeling, it really is, but trust me when I tell you that Zombie Apocalypse ain't got nothing on the fucking Exorcist. He's actually rather lucky. I didn't tell him that, though.

Anyway, he was up until midnight, and then his brother came into my bed around 1:30 and stayed for the night, which he does every night, and I can't sleep when he's there, which means I don't sleep any night.

So FUCK YOU, medical establishment and your goddamn "get some sleep" advice. Why can't "take up smoking" ever be your answer to something?? I could totally do that.

I think my Bells Palsy is acting up again, I'd better go lie down.

Bells Palsy sounds vaguely pornographic or euphemistic...I don't know what it is...Balls pullsey? I don't know. Yeah, Epstein Barr...more sleep. Mono...more sleep. Flu...sleep.

Bells palsy involves paralysis of the facial nerves. It can get better on its own or not. Treated sometimes with corticosteroids. I know one adult and one child who have suffered episodes of Bell's Palsy. But I am told that you can cure it with more sleep, I read that somewheres on the interwebs...
Right? Why can't "eat a bowl of ice cream" be the advice my doctor gives me? No. She's all like, "don't want to get pregnant again, let me rip out your uterus." Although, perhaps if I DID do that, I might actually get some good drugs AND some sleep.

Food for thought.

Interesting....
Nine must have been the go to age for messing up children because for some reason when I too was roughly 9 years old my parents let me watch Nightmare on Elm street. I was afraid to sleep for the rest of my childhood and.........Well, I'll just leave it at that.

OMG my parents let me watch It's Alive. It screwed me up for YEARS. Had to sleep with the radio on forever. Then guess what came right back to mind when I went into labor. You guessed it. ARGH. poor kiddo.

Me too!!! It's Alive and The Brood. My siblings are 10 years older than I am so I got to watch a few horrible things I shouldn't have.
I also love it when people say that to be healthy you should reduce stress. Like we're seeking out stress voluntarily and hanging onto it for dear life? Most people don't choose stress; it chooses them.

Want to lose weight? Too bad. "Studies show that lack of sleep may cause you to gain weight."
Great. Now I'm going to continue to be both fat AND tired.

RIGHT. And then there's that whole "studies show that...." bullshit. FUCK studies!
Sleep . . . what is that again?! I vaguely recall getting something like that years ago . . . before kids.
Yeah, get more sleep is right up there with minimize stress...

Without fail, my mother will tell me to take a nap when we talk on the phone. I'm like, WTF? Sure, we'll just throw some food on the floor for the 3 year old and tell the cats to chaperone.

Hahaha, I am Bipolar and my doctor tells me to be careful of how much sleep I get so I don't get depressed! As far as I'm concerned, ice cream cures all my ills.
FYI, Bells Palsy sucks, I have had it for almost a year and for the first 3 months I looked like I had a stroke. The whole right side of my face drooped...a lot and I could not close my eye. It super sucks to have to tape your eye closed to sleep. Also, it is VERY painful. It can because by multiple things as well, such as stress (which is what mine was caused by), ear infection, Herpes, or even trauma to your face. It can usually gets better on its own, but the neurologist told me where ever you are a 6months is probably where you are going to stay. I am at about 90%, not great, but I will take it! Also, they put you on steroids. Hello extra 30 pounds!
Wait--you're Jewish. Do you guys even have to worry about demons? I thought that Catholics were the only ones with that kind of partying. I wore a religious medal for months after seeing that movie.

I watched that Discovery show. I didn't think it was all that great. They did show a lot of zombies running about, but no brains were harmed during filming.

You saw it??? He keeps talking about how people got their faces eaten off.
They showed zombies attacking people, but no actual eating of the faces. He probably heard about that guy in Florida and extrapolated. That is what I do. What I imagine is always way scarier than what I saw.

Alien. The movie that scarred me for life at the age of nine (or so) was Alien. Why the hell did they let me watch that?
I guess that's definitely more traumatic than my friend letting her 6-year old watch Don't Mess with Zohan.

But sleep...where was I? I forget. I need to get more sleep.

So very true! We share the same sleep schedule. I'm so sorry to hear that.

You know when those people at work complain about how tired they are? Like "Oh, I slept for just two hours last night. Poor me." TRY SLEEPING JUST TWO HOURS FOR 10 YEARS, WIMP!"

You know I saw "The Exorcist" when I was really young, but I didn't get what was going on well enough for it to be scary. It scared me more when I saw it for the second time when I was older.

But a friend made me watch one of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies at a sleepover when I was nine, and that screwed me up for a good long while.
I want my Dr. to say I need to gain 15 lbs. and that sitting on my ass will make me more beautiful and healthier.

What is sleep, anyway? My son is such a bad sleeper and anyone telling me that s/he is tired because s/he had to get up at 7:00 is being punched in the face by me. Well, almost ;-)

The "you need to get more sleep," is right up there with, "you need to reduce your stress," and, "you're just a busy mom." They all make me want to throat punch the doctor.
Crack. Crack is always the answer. "Sleep" is just a code word.
I totally agree with you, that's so true what you've complained about. People usually don't think that all of us have got some reasons why we act like we do. Sometimes, the circumstances can be really different.

The kids are actually to a point where they're letting me sleep right now, and now I can't. Last night was the first time in a week that I didn't take an Ambien. Hormones? Chronic pain? Zombies? I don't know.

And for me it was American Werewolf in London.
