Sensory friendly movies

I'd heard of these but we've never been to one, and I saw a link that select AMC theaters would be having some sensory friendly showings of the new Harry Potter movie, I checked it out; and check this out! How cool are sensory friendly movies??!
In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.
That is so cool!! We never go to movies, mostly because it's such a hassle with the 2 of them, the last time we saw Up and for the whole thing I don't think there was a single time when the 4 of us were all sitting in our seats together; we all spent a LOT of time in the lobby. Child 1 would be so happy to have an aisle to run up and down, we could totally make a sensory friendly movie work. Not Harry Potter, though, because even though they've seen all the other movies a bunch of times, I'm sure it's not appropriate for a 5 year old (even though he was Lord Voldemort for Halloween) and I need to see it first to see how scary it is. Anyway, I don't want to go see that with my kids, I want to see it with grownups!

I absolutely recommend you go. We take Xander and Spencer all the time. There was Time Magazine article about it last April (I was quoted in it which shows what low standards they must have). Here's the link: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1977230,00.html

One of our local theaters has been doing this for a while. My boy won't go. He hasn't been to a movie in about 5 years. Prefers watching the Weather Channel and commecials with Wilford Brimley.

@Big Daddy - Who could blame him? Wilford Brimley is dreamy.

That's like the coolest thing ever.

It sorta sucks taking Owen to the movies. He gets the headphones, but they don't play nice with hearing aids, he makes do 'cause he fucking LOVES movies, but I feel bad for him.

Also? Can't wait to see this one. I've NEVER seen a Harry Potter on the big screen. Have to catch this one. WITH GROWNUPS.

Amazing! And I love that our theater has one! Lex is clearly too young, but this would be the perfect way to see a movie for a little one.

Sounds like a regular movie at one of our local theaters to me (as far as the talking and running around). LOL!

Let me know how it goes.

I've never been to one, but they sound like a great idea! They usually pick more small-kid friendly fare.

Groups get together here and arrange SN viewings, where the sound is turned down and the lights left on, just like what you posted. The parents arrange them though rather than the cinemas offering them unprompted. It is a great idea :) Jen

we've never tried a movie. I'm not sure Harry Potter is Little Bird's speed, but I'd be down to try one of these sometime. There's a theater close by that does this. Guess I need to look it all up soon...

Imagonna look for that here, sounds great, there is a theater that would probably have them in midtown that also serves wine.
