Memories of my brother

For those of you who don't know, I had an older brother who died almost 9 years ago. Every once in a while I'm going about my business and something will remind me of him. This is a funny one so I thought I'd share.

Earlier I was chatting on Twitter (no, really) and I saw a conversation go by about bands that were fronted by bass players. Primus was the example used and I piped in with fIREHOSE, which is a band fronted by a bass player, Mike Watt, and it reminded me of this story.....

My brother was a big fan of fIREHOSE when he was in college and he used to go see them all the time. One year, I don't remember which, he was going traveling in Southeast Asia and was going to be out of the country for months. Before he left, he wrote Mike Watt a letter, telling him how much he was going to miss him while he was gone, and Mike Watt wrote back, thanking him.

I've always thought that story was both hilarious and adorable.

Here's my favorite fIREHOSE song, probably nobody has ever heard it. It's called Chemical Wire.

It is the same with me and my sister who died. Something will remind me of her or something random will happen that makes me think she is playing cosmic jokes on me. Memory keeps her close but life does feel less rich without her.
It's awesome that a great memory of your brother sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Although I find it hard to believe you were on twitter...that part seems suspicious.

Spooky. I've just read the other post about your brother. My sister had Melanoma too. Could this be one of those random occurences that convince me that she is never very far away?
and she was 35

Whatever your beliefs are, sometimes it's nice to imagine that these little recollections and sudden memories are them dropping by with a hello.
I'd never read that story about your brother before today. It was beautiful.
Cancer sucks ass.
I lost a brother as well, he was only 17 (this is 17 years ago now). The most random thing will push him to the front of my mind. And this past week, I swear to GAH I saw the ghost of him. I'm not creeped out by that, or even ashamed to admit it. I felt, well, comfort in knowing he's watching over me and especially my boys. Anyway - happy memories of our brothers, right?

Oh!
Oh, as if she were to bump her shin in the night and utter a small audible Oh "Oh", like when the doctor says "Oh!" as in things don't look so good, or like Whitman's O, O gossamer thread, O filament, filament, filament . . . Or the "Oh" that comes into a room after the wind has just filled the curtains and empitied tehm again. Just Oh!
Not the "Oh" of a funeral but of a year later when you simply look up from your work and remember,0 Oh!
have more but I'll stop now . I feel your pain.

You're nuts.

I like that.
I'm sorry for your loss. I have a brother and I can't imagine... I love him very much as I am sure you love yours. God bless...

Firehose was a favorite of mine back in the college days. I bet your brother was one cool dude. Glad you are spontaneously gifted these great memories!
Love that. The good memories keep us going, don't they?

What a nice memory. I kind of like when people we've lost come back to visit in memories. Also, very cool that the bass player wrote back to him.

It's nice to have good memories of people you love.

So, I lost my brother 5 years ago and this happens to me all the time! I think its a good think.

On another note Mike Watt is awesome! I am full of Mike Watt trivia. Like he took the Foo Fighters out on their first tour ever supporting his solo gig. And a couple of months a go he did a show in seattle were he was joined by Mr Eddie Vedder and Mr Dave Grohl. Talk about a meeting of 90's rock legends :)

Thanks for sharing!

It's really nice that you had such an awesome memory of your brother - triggered by Twitter, no less. Reading this & your original post about him made me think of my own brothers and how much I miss them sometimes. Thanks for sharing with us.

Ugh. I feel like having a group hug with my sis and bro now. Brutal. I have those moments, luckily about my Mom, but mostly I just wish the hell she wasn't gone.

That's a really cool story!

Hugs!

I have a love/hate relationship with such types of memory triggers. ((hugs)) My most recent one was while we were on vacation, of my dad. I agree with the sentiment mentioned previously - cancer is a harsh bitch!

I had never even heard of fIREHOSE. Pretty pathetic, huh? I like their music, so I guess I'll have to follow you.

Those memories hit me at such random times. I used to get so sad when this happened, but now I'm a little more able to enjoy the memory. My bro's favorite was the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Hugs to you!
