Happy 4th of July

Happy Independence Day!!

I wonder if this is what our forefathers had in mind for us, 235 years later. They fled their homeland in search of religious freedom and look at us now! Millions of people living in poverty, with a very very small percentage of people doing really really well. Politicians who only care about power and making a name for themselves, at the expense of the people they supposedly "represent," while most of us struggle every day to make a living for ourselves, feed our kids, keep ourselves and our families alive and hope to some day find a little happiness for ourselves.

Is this what they meant for us, 235 years ago? Where 1% of the people have 90% of the wealth? And most of the people in the middle are, for some reason, okay with that? Where people lose their homes and everything they own, because they've lost their jobs and can't find new ones and our government (and the people who support them) prioritize penises on Twitter over people's lives? Over people's health? Over people's worth?

Do you think this is what they meant?

Happy Independence Day, everybody!!

That's a big problem...the people in the "middle." Who are they exactly? What happened to the middle class? This country is turning into a country of very rich and very poor. As you pointed out, there aren't very many very rich!

My plan to get out of the middle class is to get someone famous to tweet me pictures of their penis (or vagina, I don't judge). So stop discouraging this behavior, please, my kids need money for college.

No, but our attempts to fix those problems have made them worse. The founders wanted freedom of opportunity not equality of outcome. Removing barriers to success, and letting the small guy get a chance to expand his business will do more to repair those problems than handing out other peoples money and promoting a culture of dependency.

BTW, George Washington allotted his troops extra rum and shot off cannons on July 4th.
So you could say that our founding fathers did want us to get drunk and blow stuff up. I am following in that tradition.

The great irony is the politics involved. If you ask the right what's wrong with the country, it's the left. And vice versa. Neither side really sees that both side are the problem, because neither side can ever admit fault.

Actually, I think many of our founding fathers were just as political and self-serving as politicians are today. But I agree with the sentiment - we have a lot of work to do.

OCCUPY THESE COMMENTS!!!! DOWN WITH CORPORATE GREED!!!!

Last night as I was leaving the Pens game, i walked past the tent city that Occupy Pittsburgh is currently creating in a park near the Consol Energy Center. I tried to take a picture on my way to the game, but I was late and it was raining, so I figured I'd do it on the way back. But I wanted to get home and I had to pee, and it was STILL raining, so I didn't.

BUT. . .

I thought of you and the guy from twitter when I saw the tent city. And when I was watching the news coverage of Occupy Wallstreet.

"What's that?" Emma said as she saw the news camera pan over the Occupy Wall Street tent city.
"Those are dirty hippies, Em" I answered.
"What are they doing?"
"They are protesting."
"What are they protesting?"
"Showers and corporate greed."
"Showers?"
"Apparently."
"And corporate greed?"
"That's what the sign said."

Now she knows everything *I* know about the protest.
